[From the Preface] I have wanted to search for the reasons why this society consigns black people to be "Invisible Men," in Ralph Ellison's phrase, while rewarding the scions of established families with automatic preferance. I sought some kind of explanation for why we condemn thousands of coal miners to sudden or lingering death in our pursuit of competitive fuel prices.
