Written in a flat, affectless style that made the characters -- detectives, witnesses, perpetrators -- seem wooden, and their motivations seem like a checklist of quirks that must be ticked off, rather than real human interactions. Especially given the distressing subject matter, I decided I didn't need to carry on.
