Working in the LAPD's Open-Unsolved Unit, Detective Harry Bosch and his new partner, Rookie Detective Lucia Soto, are given the case of Orlando Merced. Mr. Merced was shot by a stray bullet ten years ago while playing in a mariachi band. He has now succumbed to his injuries. The bullet that was lodged in his spine has now been removed during an autopsy. Bosch and Soto must take a look at this case to see if they can find the shooter.

This could just be my favorite Harry Bosch book. Not only do you get the Merced case, but Bosch and Soto are also working a twenty-year-old arson case that left nine children dead at a daycare. Both mysteries are riveting. The story didn't drag at all. I think what I liked the most is that Harry actually worked with Soto, instead of running off on his own as he tends to do. My rating: 5 Stars.
