Douglas Kennedy's books are always easily read with compelling story lines. The Pursuit of Happiness is no exception. What makes it interesting is the time period in which it's set - the shameful pursuit by Senator Joe McCarthy of anyone suspected of being a communist or supporting its causes. Sara Smythe is at the epicenter of this novel with a brother accused of anti-American allegiance and a married man whose relationship with Sara is instrumental in destroying everything Sara holds dear. This man's daughter, Kate, is featured at the beginning and at the end of the book in ways she didn't anticipate.
