This book got incredible press when it was released. The author was interviewed on NPR and any number of other media outlets. It sounded like a classic in the making. What it is, however, is a snoozer. As I was reading it I couldn't help but think that the author was trying really, really hard to let the reader know just how much Eastern European history she had stuffed in her head. Unfortunately, that does not translate to a fun or even interesting read. I found the book to be dull and ponderous. The writing is good, if dull, but the story just goes nowhere. Pick this one up when you need some sleep. It will lull you to dreamland in a matter of two to three pages.
