I have'nt read this book (I should point that out first) but it seems like the ability to prevent future suffering is exactly what doctors are for.....the fact that there is a "study in ethics" and that what is decided at the end of that study, has the ability to effect anyone shows that we have a long way to go before our leaders can even consider the ideal society we should all be trying to live in.

Doctors have had the ability to map the human genome for years, for people with type 1 diabetes that means the doctors can tell them how the diabetic's DNA is different...If stem cell research was legal for just a couple days, we might find out how a type 1 diabetic's DNA becomes mutated and find a cure. That does'nt mean that for each person cured, a baby has to die, that simply means that we could find out how to prevent the mutation that causes type 1 diabetes, or even Parkinsons disease. It really does seem that when a willfully ignorant voter, votes against their best interest, the cures for mental and physical illnesses, that voter seems to be against, are allowed to exist even though we might be aware of a possible cure. Who knows if the next Plato or Socrates was born next door to us, but they were born with epilepsy, which slowly fries the brain over time. While we think we live in a civilized society, I think history will judge us differently. To put things into perspective, China has legal stem cell research, America does'nt, in North Korea smoking cigarettes is illegal, but America has a higher percentage of its population in prisons and jails. The leader of North Korea might be crazy, but at least he doesn't go around talking about how great their country is because of all the freedoms they enjoy, it seems to me that you'd have to be crazy to go around bragging about American freedoms when America has more of its population imprisoned than any other country on earth.
