Reeman gives us a wonderful story of a brand new midshipman assigned to his first ship - a brand new monitor in World War I. Their adventures in the Med also bring the boy a meeting with his first love.
Then the years pass and the boy - now a man - and the older ship meet again amid the furious early days of World War II, once again in the Med.
It is only fitting that the two serve together on their last battleground.
