This is a classic book first published in 1981, indispensable for an understanding of the diverse peoples of early California. The weaving of known facts about them, with the stories told by actual people is my idea of real history. The stories individuals tell, loved and passed on by generations, hold for me priceless gems of truth. They are so much more personal, and real than the facts compiled by outsiders, so colored by their own limited views and prejudices. You will love this book!
