I very much enjoyed Pamela Duncan's debut novel Moon Women. Plant
Life was just an okay read. Nothing terribly wrong with it, just not that special.
Laurel Granger leaves Las Vegas after her husband of many years leaves her for another woman. She goes home to Russell, North Carolina to live with her parents until she can get her life back on track. While home she befriends many of the women in the town, whose whole lives are wrapped up in the Plant, where they all work. She also comes to terms with her mother's breakdown and her idealized version of her grandparents life.
The characters of most of the women felt too stereotypical to me, and I don't feel I got to know them all that well. I liked Laurel, but at times felt she was not the person you would expect her to be after so many years of living a more 'cosmopolitan' life. And would a young woman of 30 really become fast friends with women 25 or 30 years older than she? That was one part of the book that didn't ring true with me.
This book was an easy, comfortable read, but didn't move me in anyway.
