All the Dan Lenson novels are outstanding. The series chronicles the adventures of a fictional naval officer through his entire career. Each book is exdfellent as a stand-alone novel, but they are much more satisfying if you can read them in the order in which they were written (one exception - "The Circle" was written after "The Med", but should be read first because it covers Lenson's first cruise after he graduated from Annapolis).

David Poyer is himself a retired Naval officer and an Annapolis graduate. I hear there is an English elective at Annapolis called "Writing About the Sea", which used to feature books like "Moby Dick" and "The Caine Mutiny". It now includes David Poyer's work as well.

Although I spent my military career in another branch of service and had no time at sea, Poyer captures the satisfactions and frustrations of life in the military awfully well. I suspect that his writing about the sea is just as accurate and just as well done.
