Second book in the Warstowe Saga (the others are The Fortunate Marriage, The Wanton Fires and The Sun With a Face).

This book is set in Verdun, France, where English travelers were interned during the Napoleonic wars. Lady Emily Royston had been married off to a hopeless alcoholic (now confined at home in England), had a daughter (Mab) by him and was traveling when the internment edict went down. At 16 she had been offered in marriage to Cary Vyner, but he declined. Now they meet in Verdun again and fall in love, but it seems impossible because she's still married to Royden. More historical than romantic, and does not modernize attitudes toward marriage, family, and what one did and did not do. I enjoyed it.
