The densely wooded copse near a beautiful manor house in Southern France was a good place to hunt rabbits - and a perfect place to commit murder. M. Pinaud of the Paris Surete had himself heard gunfire and seen four men emerge from the woods. And he had caught in his own arms the frightened girl who tearfully told him where her father, Colonel Romand, now lay, his head shattered by a shotgun blast.

M. Pinaud, the greatest detective the Paris Surete had ever known, felt certain the gooting was no tragic accident. But how could he discover the murderer when the entire town of Vallorme rejoiced that Romand was dead... and when so many had such good reason to kill him?
