These stories are much more playful than the gut-wrenching Half A Life that came out the same year he won the Nobel Prize for Literature. (He also won the Booker Prize in 1971 with In a Free State.) Naipaul is Trinidadian, and most of his stories take place in the Caribbean and in England. Trinidad is a wonderful place to read about with its mixture of Caribbean, South Asian (Indian), and British cultures.
