I ordered this based on the sterling reviews the book garnered on this site. Boy, what a disappointment. The language was dated as written, regardless of what era it was depicting, and it absolutely does not resonate with the modern focus on writing style or word choice. Fisher's sentences are clunky to the point of being unreadable.
The worst thing about the book is that it violates the cardinal rule of writing; show it, don't say it. Fisher should have been showing us pictures in our mind of how wonderful the last wild place on earth was, instead of having his character sing its praises with every single page.
If you happen to enjoy historical novels, I would recommend Bernard Cornwell's Sharpe series or Patrick O'Brian's sea stories any day over Fisher's work.
