From the inside front cover:

It seemed simple enough. Fouteen-year-old M'Lou wanted to get away this summer. To be new. She was fed up with the boxes she felt squeezed into by the stuffy people of Greenewood Pointe.
The thousand-acre Camp Glenmora was the perfect place to excape to. Before long even the popular counselor, the "great and powerful" Nikki, was obviously impressed, choosing M'Lou and her friends, Haze and Anne Marie, to get the famous August Plan started: this summer a tough 18-mile canoe and portage trip.
But then Margeret breaks loose. A wild inner-city kid who seems to hate everything about camp--the water, the woods, and even the people-- she pulls a knife on another camper and Nikki switches her to M'Lou's tent.
"I think you can do something for her," Nikki says.
Desperately they try, but taming Margaret is like taming a wild animal, and the days until portage tick off relentlessly. Finally something warm begins to develop between the girls, but night talks reveal a frightening secret about Marggaret, and the three decide if they're really going to "do something" for Margaret there is a letter they must write. And quickly.
In this stirring yet compassionate story, Patricia Lee Gauch explores the irony of three girls and their determined counselor who in naively trying to help a friend almost destroy her.
