The Family Masher is an epic novel of life in Russia before the evolution.Written in the 1930's by one of the great Yiddish writers of the Soviet Union.(Der Nister is a pseudonym meaning "The Hidden One"), it has been rescued in this first English translation from the obscurity into which it was cast by Stalinism. Der Nister's masterpiece is a tribute to a vanished world and an allergory for the dilemmas faced by Russian Jews, torn between past and present.
