Good-bye. That's one word fifteen-year-old Anna O'Dell has learned to say. First it was good-bye to fun times when Mama started to drink heavily. Then it was good-bye to a warm house and enough food when she started disappearing for days on end. And when Anna realizes Mama won't be coming back--ever--she knows she has to say good-bye to her childhood.

Anna is determined to protect her younger brother and sister and keep anyone from finding out about her mother's disappearance. Keeping these secrets requires courage. But with Anna's mind telling her to do one thing and her heart telling her to do another, she learns that making decisions about the future takes much, much more than courage.
