This textbook was used in a graduate level course. Each chapter consists of three elements: a beginning story to illustrate the chapter's central themes; explanatory text; and a case study. The chapter openers and case exercises encourage a lively exchange of ideas and points of view rather than dry memorization. Students learn to understand how conditions today evolved from conditions in the past,making the book's overall theoretical approach more relevant to them.
