Book Review of Carnival in Romans

Carnival in Romans
reviewed on

Pre-revolutionary France prior to the revolution when the Mardi Gras festivities provided chance for the oppressed lower social orders to express their dissatisfaction with the elite governing them. Role-changing, cross dressing, excesses of outre behaviors mirrored peasant attitudes and became the prime source for later panto forms in the theater. Heavy-duty reading about a light-hearted subject.
