ISBN 0310973279 - If there are a limited number of ways to tell the story of the birth of Jesus, I think I've read them all and am becoming difficult to impress. This one doesn't impress me.

In rhyme, the story of Mary, her pregnancy and the birth of Jesus is told.

Text, by Alice Joyce Davidson, is average. The words are fairly simple, but there are a few "bigger" words (wondrous, worshipping...) that are a bit out of place for beginning readers. Illustrator Tammie Lyon's work is a little bland but nice, with bright colors that cover every inch of every page. One thing that seemed odd - in the last image of Jesus, right after he was born, he looks like he's 3 years old and, stranger, wearing a t-shirt. This "shaped" board book appears to attempt to be in the shape of Mary, which is better than the average "just not square". The board book pages are thick and sturdy, easier to turn and more able to take a bit of toddler abuse.

Christian parents are likely to find this book more their style than non-Christians, but children will enjoy the story, whether you tell them it's real or that it's just another Christmas story.
