While the other Star Trek seem to be independent of each other, Deep Space 9 books are continuing the story from the place where the series left off. And they are doing a very good job of it.

In this one Commander Vaughn, Lt. Ezry Dax, and Dr. Bashir take the Defiant into the Gamma quadrant to spend several months exploring. (Odo has guarantee that the Dominion will not interfere with peaceful exploration.) They find a wonderful planet where the people communicate with color that appears on their skin, but the planet is threatened by periodic energy pulses that are growing in power and frequency, so Vaughn takes the Defiant off to find the source and try to stop it.

Meanwhile, back at the station, Kira is dealing with high level summit to decide on Bajors admission to the Federation. Quark and Ro Lauren are actually starting an romance. And, on Bajor, Kassidy waits for her baby to be born.

This is an excellent book and I am so very glad tha the DS9 books are continuing the story, since the DS9 ending left many things undecided. Star Trek fans should really enjoy this one.
