Thorough biography of Louis XIV seen through the lens of his relationships with the women in his life, including his mother, his Queen and his various mistresses. Louis comes off as a much nicer and more stable monarch than, say, Henry VIII, but because of the lack of drama and intrigue (the famines and wars of France are hardly mentioned), the narrative comes off as a bit dull. Still, a must-read for any fan of French aristocracy, and anyone with an interest in the royal courts of Europe of that age.
