Baldacci is consistently one of my favorite authors if not The favorite. His characters always find a place in my heart. They are just rough enough, just tough enough and capable yet good at heart. In this book Will goes off his game because of something beyond his control and backs away from his job as a sniper to take a break. He returns home after many years to find his father is awaiting trial for murder. He revisits many old memories and one old friend who is dying. The family of his old sweetheart seems to have disappeared leaving him to continue to wonder why she failed to meet him the morning they were supposed to leave town together. The fact that his father has bought her family's home keeps her on his mind. In addition, he finds he has a stepmom and a baby brother. Although his father keeps pushing him away, he is determined to discover if his father committed the murder he is in prison for. He opens a can of worms.
