The Cactus Eaters: How I Lost My Mind-and Almost Found Myself-on the Pacific Crest Trail (P.S.)
reviewed Took a while to warm up... on
Helpful Score: 3

Early in the book, the author realizes that he needs to tackle the PCT for himself, not as inspiration to others. This was disappointing since I was actually expecting a bit of inspiration, but I plowed through the first 100 pages of whining anyway, repeatedly shocked that anyone would attempt this adventure so unprepared! (Truthfully, I kept reading just to see how long it would take for his girlfriend to kick his butt.) After a while, I was amazed to find him bucking up a bit, growing up, noticing the good stuff. I'm glad stuck with the entire book and enjoyed much of it, but probably wouldn't want to hike with him. :-) Be sure to check out the interesting P.S. interviews at the back.
