Saberhagen's Berserker stories are among the most familiar series in the genre, set in a universe where automated starships wage war against all forms of life. But suddenly one Berserker behaves differently, stealing an entire orbiting biological laboratory filled with human zygotes rather than simply destroying it. A pursuit party is off to the rescue, and nearly wiped out themselves in the process.
