This is an interesting and well-researched novel, with obvious and unapologetic poetic license[s] abounding. In our present cyber-enriched environment, research is both fast and comprehensive--a veritable treasure trove of information, accessible online and susceptible to micro surgery with remote laser scapels and reassembly into grotesque but superficially plausible form. Ms. Delahunt resists the lure of turning this account into a slick special-effects action flick and, instead, uses modern techniques to enrich, with a vivid array of detail, the familiar story of the slower-paced but no less passionate and violent world of the period.
