I read THE CONFIDANT for the August 2013 "French" theme in my online book club, The Reading Cove.

The narrative was choppy and disjointed and the story didn't flow well at all. So I lost interest in where it was going.

It also seemed highly unlikely that Louis would write these letters in such detail to Camille. Would the man really give blow-by-blow details in anonymous letters about taking Anne's virginity? Doubt it.

So it was a rather amateur epistolary style: using these thick letters as a way to paint a vivid picture of what took place in the past, basically in the style of a conventional novel. It just isn't plausible.

I give THE CONFIDANT a C-.
