This splendid story far outstrips the mediocre blurb on the back cover. I have read the Linnet Bird also and neither book follows the usually stereotypical plotlines. Linda Holeman's descriptive writing is the perfect medium to explore unusual backgrounds, this time Marrakech in the 1930s. As an American woman in Morocco, Sidonie seems out of place and out of her depth, lonely and surrounded by a strange culture. But her strength of character prevails and she graduallly integrates herself into the Muslim community, even to the extent of wearing a veil. Driven first by blind love and then by the need to know, she uncovers the surprising truth about her lover.
