Garden Spells is this author's first published novel. Claire, a popular caterer, adds edible flowers to her recipes for magical effects. Evanelle has spontaneous urges to bring people very specific items that eventually are helpful with something important in the future. Sydney, Claire's estranged sister, returns to their childhood home in Bascom, North Carolina, with her 5-year old daughter to escape domestic abuse and give her daughter a secure childhood.

There are similarities to Alice Hoffman's Practical Magic and possibly Kate Morten's The Forgotten Garden and one of your favorite romance authors. With realistic characters and situations, the use of magical realism was an entertaining and almost believable diversion. Â
