It's been years since I read The Gold Coast, so I'd forgotten John's sarcastic and whimsical sense of humor and wit--he's the narrator of this book. I'd find myself mentally clapping as I read his mental take on meetings and greetings, and it was a bit distracting. However, once the book hit its stride, this became a cannot-put-down read and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
In these lean times (2009 as I write this), it's not easy to read about the free-wheeling folks with oodles of money and feel a lot of connection with them. I never did feel empathy for Susan, John's former wife, but by the end of this book I was thinking that she's a match for John, and it's a good match!
