It is great to read or reread these classic tales of Poe. What I was immediately struck by was his fabulous vocabulary. The man could certainly write-paint a terrifying, spooky, fearsome scene. The first stories are listed below.

Tell-Tale Heart;
The Cask of the Amontillado;
The Masque of the Red Death;
The Fall of the House of Usher

Then the author switched to a different genre. If I remember correctly, Edgar Allan Poe was credited with creating the mystery/detective story. The next two short stories are with C. Auguste Dupin, an extraordinary detective.

The Murders in the Rue Morgue
The Purloined Letter

Finally, this book ends with a very scary short story. This is truly Poe's greatest scary story.
The Pit and the Pendulum

I was somewhat surprised by the inclusion of the Auguste Dupin stories, as they weren't scary. However, it was great to reread some stories I haven't read in many years.
