Can't give this a great review--
It takes about half the book for the story to finally unfold, you have to get through the prologue of the characters first and then when they 'connect' that is when the story finally gets started
BUT--there is way too much fighting, either a knock out drag out roll on the ground fight or a gun battle is happening and that takes up a lot of pages and most of it can be skimmed because how much can you say about every fight?
Then there are too many pages of just descriptions of the landscape, the garden, the water, the houses, the wine and on and on, that too can be skimmed as it has nothing to do with the story
I've liked a lot of his other books but this one just wasn't as interesting, I'll read more by Kernick but this one just didn't cut it
