Emily knows her older sister Kate, recently widowed and released from slavery in one marriage of convenience, will marry once more to secure their safety unless Emily does something about it first. So, she goes west, to homestead in Montana, and informs Kate that she is taken care of, and that she has married. It is just unfortunate that the plot of land she filed on is a reclaimed plot, and the original claim owner has returned to improve the land. Jacob Sullivan is not about to let a young, inexperienced girl keep him off his land, and decides to wait her out. When she finally gives up, the land will be his. He just doesn't believe how long it is taking Emily to realize she cannot work the land. Enjoyable read.
