What a wonderful Southern romance! Set in East Tennessee, That Summer is a story full of emotion and struggle during the 1930s. The author has captured the true essence of the people and the times in rural Appalachia.

It is gratifying to see the growth of the characters as they deal with lifes obstacles and challenges. I particularly enjoyed the way that the characters faith or lack of faith impacted his/her life and the spiritual struggles that some of the characters face. Jim is the male protagonist in the story. It is interesting to see him leave home, fall in love and generally make a way for himself in the world. He is a genuine and likeable hero, but his pride and naiveté play significant roles in his decisions and outlook. One of my favorite secondary characters is Mrs. Gertrude Hall, Jims landlady. She comes through time and time again. I admire her faith, love and generosity.

There are a few surprises, twists and turns in the story that kept me interested and turning pages quickly to see what happened next. If you like sweet, Southern romance in a historical setting, I think you will enjoy That Summer.
