I've always wanted to know more about O'Connor, as I've read other opinions how his 'accidental' capture early in the war changed history, and not to the better. O'Conner had great talent as a commander matched by his modesty. There are many British historians, by no means all of them, who feel the war would have been shorter if O'Conner had gotten command of the British 8th Army on the North African Desert and rose to command at higher level in Northern Europe.

Whether that is true or not, we (Americans) wouldn't have had to put up with that pompous jerk Montgomery who kept making excuses for his shortcomings.

Still, the book did somewhat disappoint me as it crept into descriptions of battles, troop movements and such. I wanted to read a book on O'Connor and not about the war itself.
