San Francisco was the center of 19th Century Jewish life in California, but they took the lead in many localities in providing the best mercantiles, banking facilities, and early benevolent societies. The value of this volume is in the one paragraph summaries accompanying each listing. We found it to be an excellent starting place for further reading. Well indexed.
