Donna Leon writes beautifully and her characters are human and believable. Her descriptions of Venice are wonderful and the mysteries themselves are complex and intelligent. A Sea of Troubles is is the middle of the series; each book can stand alone but I found that looking for the earlier books & reading them in series was more fulfilling to me. There are subtleties & facts that are appreciated more by knowing what came before. Highly recommended.
