The book is a collection of vignettes ("short story" isn't the right term) in which each chapter focuses on a specific character in Horace Houseman's family.  The chapters jump back in forth over time, as one will focus on Horace, the next will be about his granddaughter, and the following may be about Horace's child.  David Huddle has published several books of poetry, and indeed the writing in this novel is superb.  I enjoyed some chapters more than others and felt that the book lost steam a bit at the end, but overall it was engaging and beautifully written.

PBS has it classified as erotica, and I have no idea why - it is definitely not that.
