First let me say I did not like the way that this book was organized. I would have liked to have seen it done with a time line, perhaps according to each DCI. As I read the later chapters, I kept having to go back to the others to see what else had happened in the same time frame or with the same people.

Second, this book has an incredible amount of research backing and is a very important part of American History. The level of detail this book goes into, without compromising national security, is impressive and awe inspiring. Though much of what this book reveals was disturbing in me (the waste, narrow sightedness, and political impacts on national history), I none the less came away with a feeling of an impressive national security community that now faces challenges like never before, against enemies completely different than anything faced before.
