Old Ross Stafford used to fire a "midnight gun", the ancient cannon on his lawn, as a grim joke whenever a member of his family came home. One morning in 1900 it booms for his younger son, Bard, coming home to take his place in the family firm. Within three months, Bard is an outcast.
