Sister Shirley looks back through her life and her parents' lives as well in how her mother's love for Shirley Temple and the "glittering world" while being "plain" could in a way shake hands together. She recounts her love for learning, her time in school, growing up on a farm, and what it was like to be an eldest child of a Mennonite family during the baby boom era. It was well written and was a nice autobiography. It was neat because I have been to Lititz and Lancaster many times before I, myself became a Mennonite, so it was nice to hear what life is like being born into a family with the beliefs I have come to myself. It was also cool how she talked about the "fresh water" kids that many Mennonite families took in, because I know a family that also took in a "fresh water" kid in the 1990's. I felt I could relate in small ways. It is wonderful her parents were so supportive of her too. Even though she recounts life in trying to not be prideful, her family life is a bit of something I wish I had. They loved, lost, struggled, and worked hard together.
