Hicks takes a historical figure (Carrie McGavock, who maintained a graveyard for Civil War soldiers who died near her house in the Battle of Franklin) and imagines her life, including the stories of a veteran who was carried to her house after the war and a poor boy caught up in the aftermath of the battle
