After enjoying LEGEND by Marie Lu, I was really looking forward to PRODIGY.
Did I enjoy it as much? No, not really. I found much of the plot to be very transparent and predictable...that is, right up until the end! The reader is thrown for a serious loop in the final pages of the story! I won't spoil it, but I definitely did not see that coming!
June and Day are back at it, fighting for peace and equality in the war between the Republic and Colonies dystopian future, and struggling to know who they can and can't trust. A lot of who's good and who's bad is pretty obvious, and shouldn't be a surprise to the reader, but still came as shocks to Day and June in the story.
June and Day are only teenagers, but they read much older in the narrative. I think that's one of the things I liked about the first book. It makes me wonder if the author originally had older leads in mind and was encouraged to target the YA audience by making them teens...because, for the most part, these two are far more advanced than most 40-year-olds!
There are times, however, when the angsty teenager shows up in some of their thoughts and decisions, and I get annoyed, but I have to remind myself that they are only 15 years old, LOL.
Also, a lot of the slang (goddy) and titles (Elector Primo & Princeps) seem awkward and out of place, they don't really add much to the world-building aspect.
But all in all, I think the flow of the writing improved with PRODIGY, but I think there were more surprises in LEGEND, which I gave a solid B.
I give this one a B-, but I'm still looking forward to the next book in the series. Marie Lu is one to watch.
