There was no mention of a chocolate jewel case except in passing...mostly the story was about a dreadfully hot, humid summer in Warner Pier. Lee and Joe have 6 house guests (one stayed in his camper though) so Lee has her hands full trying to feed them all, work and have a chance of finding out how married life suit she and Joe. :) A string of burglaries from the summer cottages has the summer people pointing fingers at Joe's mother because she insured some of them. Only antiques are stolen and there is no way for Mercy (Joe's mother) to know what they had! Gina, Joe's aunt, who is hiding out from her ex-husband disappears, Pete (one of the house guests) has a gun and is posing as a bird-watcher, Brenda and Tracy, two teenagers, are trying hard not to gossip and Darrel, who lives in the camper, is shy and reclusive. Things come to a head when Joe and Lee are dining with the neighbors and robbers break in and steal the neighbors' uncle jewels. Gina is gone and the uncle's jewels are stolen and then the dead body of Gina's ex is pulled out of the lake. Things get very hectic and dangerous for all concerned. The books starts out a little slow but then takes off so fast it is hard to figure who is what and what they are doing when! Good read but tame.
