ISBN 1577596366 - There are lots of shapes books out there and finding a way to stand out from the crowd is important. Puppy Steps Shapes is ok, but not stand out. The cover, even before I opened the book, had me wondering about their attempt to stand out - this PUPPY Steps book features... Bradley Bear. If they were going to go the puppy direction, the bear thing baffled me. Even better, the rest of the set features a cat, a bunny and, finally, a dog.

Bradley Bear is shown in various places, like the park and the kitchen, holding a shape. In the picture are three other items of the same shape. The text names the shape Bradley Bear is holding and points out where the matching shapes can be found.

The illustrations by John Jordan are great. Bright colors with a minimum of clutter, to make it easier to find the shapes the reader is searching for. The board book pages are sturdy but the tabs that show the shape on each page are, by virtue of sticking out the way they do, are apt to be bent. The text points out exactly where to find the shapes you're supposed to look for, making this a very, very beginner's book; most children will likely find it too easy.
