I found this to be a disappointing romance. The heroine Amber was very passive. For instance: she lives with her scummy stepfather for almost three years while he's trapping up in the mountains. At the end of that time, she wants to escape him and go to St. Louis for a life of her own. Does she pick his pocket & steal his horse? No, she stays around, hoping to convince the stepfather to give her some money and just let her go, and ends up being bullied into a fake "marriage". Left alone in a tent while her new "husband" and stepfather go drinking - does Amber try to escape then? No, she lays down on a mat and cries her eyes out. Then the handsome Lakota Indian warrior who thinks Amber is his soul mate, and has been following her, comes into the tent to rescue her.
I have to admit I kind of lost interest in the characters after that. Spirit Wind, the hero is very intelligent, noble and loving; Amber remains passive and doubtful about being with him, then loving too (after they have great sex). It was just that kind of a read.
