In the 1960's, Richard's company sends him to Japan to form a link with another company. Richard is geeky, socially awkward, and clueless, but he is a good engineer, and the company trusts that he will not embarrass them. When he arrives in Japan his host company treats him to a typical Japanese business dinner, complete with geisha. Not realizing she's hired for the evening and that his host company is paying a lot of money for her presence, Richard falls in love with her. He innocently asks if he can meet her again, not realizing that every time he takes a walk with her, the company has to pay through the nose for her time.
The story is gentle, funny, and heartwarming. The four adult readers in my family simply loved it.
