Heart-of-the-Stallion, also known as Joe Hart, is a half-breed Nez Perce Indian. At a young age, he has seen his people forced onto reservations and left to die, leaving him with a hatred of the white man. Just before his Indian mother dies, she makes him promise to become one of the white men, rather than dying on the reservation. Since he takes after his white father, he can live amoung them and buy back the land that was taken from his people. It is the only way that he can survive and prosper. Joe agrees to give his mother peace.

Maggie Sterling also knew tragedy at a young age. She, along with her mother, was thrown from a wagon during an Indian raid. Her mother died. Maggie survived, but was injured and now has a pronounced limp. She is engaged to the foreman on her father's ranch.

From two such different worlds, and with old hatreds running between them, can these two misfits find everlasting love?
