I think every 18 year old horse-crazy girl (including me) had this same fantasy: falls in love with an unruly stallion (usually black) no one but her can ride, takes said stallion to the top of the (race, show, rodeo) circuit, along the way reconciling with wimpy father, nasty stepmother, evil brother (or sister) with the help of strong, silent, broken hero who didn't realize how much sunshine she brought into his world until she is injured in a (race, show, rodeo) accident. Oh, and don't forget the nasty, sleazy, gigilo of a professional rival, complete with cheesy accent.

This is the first book by Jessica Bird, who now writes the hugely popular Black Dagger Brotherhood series as JR Ward. Even if you do not care for books about vampires (as I don't generally) I would highly recommend you checking out this series by Ward. Wonderful! However, I should by now know better than to go back and read the first effort of an author I have just discovered, especially if its been a few years. They have to start somewhere! There are a few glimpses of the snappy dialog she's know for now, but really, this book is a cliche from begining to end. The female lead acts more like she's 15 than 28, and the rest of the characters are paper thin. Only read this one if you are determined to read all Bird/Ward books. What she writes now is 100 times better!
