This book starts off exactly where Last Sacrifice ends. I wouldn't even call it a spin-off since every character from VA appears in this book except Lissa though she is spoken of. The only difference is that Sydney and the Alchemists are center stage. Otherwise it is a complete regurgitation of the VA series but instead of Rose, Lissa, Christian and Dimitri we have Sydney, Jill, Adrian and Eddie. There is a spirit bounded pair, a boarding school where Sydney has to actually go to school and hell even the guardian is in love with his charge. And don't even get me started on Kevin. I knew where that plot was going right from the beginning. No surprises there.

I usually love Richelle Mead's writing but this book is a total cope out. I'm extremely disappointed and this is a series I will not be continuing though I will say that I enjoyed the ending tremendously - much more so than the entire book!
